The hole in our holiness is that we don't care much about holiness. Or, at the very least, we don't understand it. And we all have our reasons too: Maybe the pursuit of holiness seems legalistic. Maybe it feels like one more thing to worry about in your already overwhelming life. Maybe the emphasis on effort in the Christian life appears unspiritual. Or maybe you've been trying really hard to be holy and it's just not working! Whatever the case, the problem is clear: too few Christians look like Christ and too many don't seem all that concerned about it. This is a book for those of us who are ready to take holiness seriously, ready to be more like Jesus, ready to live in light of the grace that produces godliness. This is a book about God's power to help us grow in personal holiness and to enjoy the process of transformation.

A Clear Call to Pursue Holiness

In The Hole in Our Holiness, Kevin DeYoung offers a straightforward and convicting look at what it means to live a holy life. He reminds readers what holiness is, why it matters, and how it flows from union with Christ rather than mere rule-following. DeYoung also clarifies the role of repentance and emphasises that grace doesn’t cancel effort—it fuels it. The Christian life, he argues, is not passive but requires intentional growth in godliness. Short, clear, and biblically grounded, this book is a helpful reminder that holiness is not optional, but an essential part of following Christ.

An Accessible Introduction to Sanctification

As a pastor, I'm always looking for resources that hit the sweet spot - not too academic, not too elementary. Something that challenges Christians to do theology well while staying biblical and accessible, with practical application they can actually use. The Hole in Our Holiness is one of those books. It's become one of my top go-to resources for discipling people toward a biblical understanding of sanctification. DeYoung explains the doctrine clearly, avoids both legalism and license, and shows what genuine gospel-driven holiness actually looks like in daily life. An added bonus: DeYoung introduces the doctrine of union with Christ beautifully and weaves practical theology throughout the entire book. If you're a pastor, buy copies in bulk and hand them out to members in your church. Read it with men to train them up. Start a book study and encourage your people to read it with one another. Your people will be the better for it.
