Previously published as My Heart in His Hands, this book is fully revised and updated and is the best modern biography of Ann Judson available. If you only read one biography this year, read Ann Judson: A Missionary Life for Burma. If you're going through trials or suffering you need to read this book and find out that trials are always for a purpose rightly understood, they glorify God and build us up in the faith. Sharon James uses the sources carefully to bring Ann (and Adoniram) Judson's piety and hard work for the Lord to our attention, not to venerate them but to challenge us to deeper commitment and service to the Lord.

Steadfast Devotion: The Quiet Strength of Ann Judson

Sharon James’ Ann Judson: A Missionary Life for Burma offers a thoughtful and often moving portrait of a woman whose life was marked by deep conviction, discipline, and quiet resilience. What stood out most to me was not just the historical account of missionary life, but Ann’s intense personal devotion—something that comes through clearly in her own words. Her early resolutions, formed in conscious dependence on God, were especially striking. They reveal a life intentionally structured around prayer, Scripture, and self-examination. There’s a seriousness and sincerity to her faith that feels both challenging and humbling. Her desire to “live wholly devoted to God” and to rely not on her own strength but on divine grace gives a clear window into the foundation of everything she later endured and accomplished. I was also struck by her motives for self-improvement. She was careful to reject ambition rooted in pride, instead aiming to cultivate her abilities purely for God’s glory and the good of others. That kind of clarity of purpose feels rare and gives weight to her later sacrifices. Like many missionary wives of her time, Ann’s life is undeniably compelling: her dedication to her husband, her service to the people of Burma, and her steadfast faith make her story worth reading. That said, the writing style itself is not especially engaging or vivid, which made it harder at times to stay fully absorbed in the narrative. Still, the substance of her life carries the book. It’s a worthwhile read for those interested in missionary history or examples of disciplined, faith-driven living.

Hard to put down!

This was truly a great read...so much so that I read it in only two days! I was really struck by Ann's courage to go to a new land with a new husband and face unimaginable challenges and dangers. Her perseverance in the midst of trials was truly outside of her own ability and surely evidence of God's grace in her life. The way Sharon James interwove Ann's own personal letters and writings through the book made it feel like you really were getting to know Ann herself and not just reading about her life. I would highly recommend this book!
